Bunzl Catering Supplies has two, sustainable, on the go food packaging brands called Sustain (compostable) and Revive (Recyclable). To support catering operators using and promoting these brands (and their inherent end-of-life solutions), we’ve produced a point-of-sale poster for each brand that tells consumers what type of food packaging is being used on site and how, disposed of correctly, it can be composted or recycled at its end of life.
Catering operators can print and display these posters in various front of house locations to communicate to consumers that their business has sustainability top-of-mind when purchasing single use packaging items. Displayed above the correct bin, the posters can act as a signal to only dispose of the Sustain or Revive product in that particular receptacle, reducing the risk of contamination from other material types.
The Sustain brand is a compostable range, made from renewable resources, and with high volume product lines certified EN13432. Sustain disposable products are made from renewable resources and are fully compostable in commercial composting facilities – breaking down into reusable compost within just 12-weeks. Sustain products should be placing it in a dedicated compostable bin to ensure it is sent for composting.
The Revive brand incorporates recyclable packaging products which generally contain at least 50 per cent recycled content, which means they will likely be exempt from the H.M. Treasury Plastic Packaging Tax – a proposed, standalone piece of UK legislation which will place a tax on plastic packaging products that contain less than 30% recycled content. The tax is likely to apply to all plastic polymers including bio-plastics like PLA. Revive products should be scraped free of any food debris and placed it in a dedicated recyclables bin to ensure it is sent for recycling.
Sustain hot cups are made from a sustainable paper source with a bio-plastic lining. They are available with the distinctive Sustain branding or in plain Kraft or plain white. Plates, bowls and hot food packaging in the Sustain range are made from bagasse, a waste material from the production of sugar cane.
New to the Revive range in 2019 was the 100% recycled salad container. Manufactured in the United Kingdom and embossed with the words “100% recycled plastic – I used to be a bottle”, the Revive salad container is made from 100% rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate).
Also part of the Revive range are Graze Pots – snack-size pots ideal for presenting smaller health-conscious portions or for between-meal grazing. Part of the Revive range of recycled and recyclable packaging, Graze Pots come in four sizes, with a lid and topper to fit.
Due to its value, PET and rPET are the most widely recycled materials in Europe and PET is currently the only plastic material that can be recycled back into food grade material. It is also lightweight compared to other packaging, up to 85 per cent lighter than glass, which helps cut transportation costs, in-turn lowering CO2 emissions.
The provision of clear customer information on sustainability is an integral part of the Bunzl Catering Supplies Sustainable Future programme.
Introducing products with high recycled content also forms part of Bunzl Catering Supplies’ strategy for delivering Sustainable Development Goal 12 Target 3: By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
