BUNZL CATERING SUPPLIES EMPLOYEES VOLUNTEER AT ‘THE BREAD AND BUTTER THING’, ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING COMMUNITY FOOD ORGANISATIONS.

Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division runs a volunteering scheme which encourages employees to support local charities by working as a hands-on volunteer one day each year. The scheme works by giving employees a day’s paid leave and linking employees to an online portal showing projects and initiatives in need of local volunteers.

On 24 August, Bruce Adams (transport manager), Jordan Skett (warehouse supervisor) and Nigel Heaton (driver) from Bunzl Catering Supplies spent the day volunteering at The Bread and Butter Thing in Manchester, one of the UK’s leading community food organisations.

The Bread and Butter Thing has a mission to unleash the power of food and ignite long-lasting change in struggling neighbourhoods across the UK. Their mobile food clubs give access to nutritious and affordable food taken into the heart of communities – providing essential produce for family eating including fresh fruit and vegetables, fridge favourites and cupboard staples.

Volunteer Bruce Adam, commented: “It was a good day! We learned how The Bread and Butter Thing gives back to the community, how their organisation is structured and how their hubs help local communities access low-cost food essentials. They explained how low-income families rely on their help, and how local volunteers help distribute the food to ensure costs stay low. I enjoyed being part of the volunteer team, supporting and giving back to the community.”

Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division is a socially responsible business with a track-record of working closely with local charities and communities across the UK to support a wide range of projects. The business has actively developed the volunteering scheme as part of its ongoing commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically goal 3 – ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.
