Supporting Wagamama on a more sustainable food packaging solution

BUNZL CATERING SUPPLIES SUPPORTS WAGAMAMA ON A MORE SUSTAINABLE FOOD PACKAGING SOLUTION

On 15 August, restaurant chain Wagamama, launched an initiative to replace its delivery bowls with a range of new bowls made from CPET.  By replacing its traditional packaging with CPET bowls, Wagamama estimates a 62% reduction in carbon footprint on its most popular dish alone, the katsu curry.

CPET is the material of choice for hot meals due to its superior functional properties and the unique way it combines food safety and circularity. CPET packaging is, on average, made from 70% recycled content and can be fully recycled into new food grade products again and again.

A key supplier to Wagamama for over 10 years, Bunzl Catering Supplies supported this initiative, working in partnership with sustainable food packaging manufacturer Faerch.

Liam Fitchett, Key Account Manager at Faerch UK Ltd says “Faerch are delighted to be part of this initiative to create a Foodservice industry first.  By Wagamama choosing CPET as the base material for this new product launch, they have made the right decision using fact-based sustainability information and ensured the quality of their food will not be compromised.”

Bunzl Catering Supplies is also working with Wagamama on a ‘Bowl Bank’ scheme, enabling customers to bring back used packaging to its restaurants to be collated and segregated on-site and placed into dedicated ‘Bowl Bank’ bins for recycling.

These bowls are collected by Bunzl Catering Supplies drivers whilst making their usual deliveries, utilizing existing space on the vehicle. On return to the Bunzl Catering Supplies branches, the waste bags are put into dedicated recycling bins and sent for recycling via its waste management partner.

Justin Turquet, Head of Sustainability at Bunzl Catering Supplies comments: “We are delighted to be partnering with Wagamama on the ‘Bowl Bank’ scheme to ensure that valuable materials are recaptured and meet the right waste streams for recycling.  Together with the introduction of recycled and recyclable CPET bowls, we are pleased to be supporting our customer Wagamama for a sustainable future in the hospitality industry.”

According to Wagamama, the full transition to CPET bowls and the ‘Bowl Bank’ scheme are set to be completed by October 2022.
