At its ‘Sustainable Future’ conference in March, Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division, together with 14 partner suppliers, raised a significant £6350 donation for its nominated charity Hope4.
Hope4 was founded by Chris and Zoe Lomas in January 2021, to help transform the lives of children in Moldova, where conditions within employment and institutional care are extremely poor. The charity has evolved from its humble beginnings to support over 450 orphans in more than 50 children’s homes, an orphan crisis centre, a centre for victims of abuse, as well as countless families suffering from starvation.
Seeing lives transformed and honest hope offered to families across Moldova and beyond, Hope4 credits corporate partner generosity for the success of many of its humanitarian projects, most recently supporting women and children fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. Since listening to bombs drop just across the border from where they live, Chris and Zoe have supported thousands of desperate refugees, as well as mounting a response to the devastating rise in organised crime and human trafficking.
Moldova is Europe’s poorest country, with average monthly salaries of just £150 per month. Because it sits outside the European Union it does not benefit from EU funding, so it is struggling to cope with the huge numbers of refugees flooding across the border. It is estimated that almost 5% of people currently in Moldova are refugees, this number places a huge strain on an already struggling infrastructure. Additionally, Moldova is the human trafficking capital of the world, per capita it is thought that as much as 10% of the population is trafficked at some point.
Joint founder of Hope4, Chris Lomas, comments: “We can only do what we do with the incredible support of organisations like Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division and their partner suppliers in the hospitality industry. Their generous donation is helping to provide financial support to refugee camps and institutions providing temporary accommodation to refugees, as well as supporting a nationwide offensive against trafficking. We are truly humbled by the contribution we have received.”
Hope4 was nominated as the official divisional conference charity in 2022 by Elizabeth Walters, Channel Director at Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division. Elizabeth has been working in the hospitality sector for 30 years, and first met Hope4 founder Chris Lomas in this capacity in the 1990’s. Elizabeth was compelled to support Chris after hearing first-hand about the level of need in Moldova and most recently Ukraine, and believed the conference would make a good platform to appeal for much needed support from the division’s partner suppliers.
Katie Shaw, Head of Purchasing at Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division, comments: “When we spoke to our suppliers at our conference about the critical work that Hope4 was undertaking in Moldova and the Ukraine, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of their response. Our sincere gratitude goes to our partner suppliers: Amipak, CED Fabrications, Cofresco, Colpac, Falcon, FSG UK, Huhtamaki Northwood, SC Johnson Professional, Steelite and Winterhalter, their support for Hope4 will have a positive impact on countless lives.”
