The delayed 2020 waste2zero awards virtual event.

Monday March 1, 2021

Due to ongoing restrictions around COVID-19, the 2020 Footprint News waste2zero Awards that were due to be held in October last year, will now be held on Thursday 25 March, as a live virtual event on YouTube.

Bunzl Catering Supplies is excited to once again be the Headline Sponsor for the pioneering waste2zero Awards 2020, having sponsored the event each year since the inaugural awards in 2017. The virtual awards will showcase the excellent work achieved by the foodservice packaging industry to reduce waste, promote recycling and encourage environmentally responsible end-of-life solutions for disposable packaging products.

Footprint News says “We are incredibly excited about this [live event] because it will open the awards up to a far greater audience than we could physically expect to get into a room. Indeed, as around 40% of the online Footprint reach now resides outside the United Kingdom, we will be welcoming a multi-national audience to recognise those organisations who have demonstrated excellence in waste management and prevention across the various categories.”

What is it all about?

Established in 2017, the objective of waste2zero is to specifically give the out of home food and drink industry a platform to showcase best practice and recognise excellence in this vital area.

Waste remains endemic and a mega-trend and one of the biggest challenges to the out of home sector. Food waste, in particular, has emerged as one of the defining sustainability issues of our modern food system. Plastics, packaging and other non-food waste presents a problem too.

In the out of home sector, around a million tonnes of food is wasted every year, of which a staggering 75% is avoidable. Simultaneously, 1.3 million tonnes of packaging and 0.66 million tonnes of other non-food wastes are also discarded.

Justin Turquet, Head of Sustainability at Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division, comments, “As part of our Sustainable Future programme we are working with our people, our customers and our suppliers to be part of industry-leading dialogue and action around waste. We are happy to once again support a platform that enables organisations to highlight their sustainability initiatives for a reduced environmental impact in the foodservice industry and I was proud to this year be on the judging panel.”
