As a market-leader in food packaging solutions and as part of its Sustainable Future programme, Bunzl Catering Supplies is keen to explore sustainable material innovation. In light of proposed and forthcoming legislation on single use plastic packaging and in response to consumer demand for a more sustainable approach to eating on the go, Bunzl Catering Supplies is collaborating with innovators and manufacturers at the forefront of sustainable material innovation – particularly innovation that can be utilised in food packaging applications.

One such innovation is a new base material called Notpla. Notpla Coating is made from seaweed and plants and can be used as a grease proof and water-resistant barrier on board food packaging. Bunzl Catering Supplies is showcasing Notpla Coated FSC certified kraft food boxes to its customers as part of its Innovate series of new and exciting products to market. Manufactured in the UK, the boxes come in two sizes 738ml and 1307ml.

The seaweed used for Notpla is one of nature’s most renewable resources, it grows fast, is globally abundant and readily available. Seaweed does not compete with food crops for land and does not need fresh water or fertiliser to grow. Naturally biodegradable, Notpla does not require specific recycling pathways and specialised industrial composting equipment to degrade. It takes less than six weeks for it to completely decompose in a home composting environment.
