Bunzl Catering Supplies, in partnership with Crown Oil, has switched its London fleet of vehicles to HVO fuel as part of its Sustainable Future programme. HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel is a second-generation biofuel made from 100% renewable raw materials that offers net greenhouse gas reductions of up to 90% in comparison to fossil diesel fuel.
The fleet at Bunzl Catering Supplies Charlton branch, all with Euro 6 engines, will now be fuelled with HVO fuel which means that Bunzl Catering Supplies will be delivering foodservice solutions to its catering and hospitality customers in London with a reduced impact on the environment.
The first trial delivery using HVO fuel was made in March to Sodexo, facilities management provider at the University of Greenwich, London. Simon Knight, Managing Director at Sodexo comments “We are delighted to partner with Bunzl Catering Supplies to launch HVO fuelled deliveries. Together we continue to make a positive impact on the world around us.”
HVO is a drop-in, alternative fuel that replaces fossil diesel fuel with no changes to Euro 6 engines and gives a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through its life cycle and also reduces noxious tail pipe emissions.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, NOx Emissions by up to 27% and PM (particulate matter) emissions by up to 84%, HVO fuel from Crown Oil meets EN 15940:2016 and ASTM D975 specifications.
First-generation biodiesel-free, fossil-free and sulphur-free, HVO is non-toxic and contains no aromatics, meaning that the fuel can operate as a 100% biofuel without the operability problems associated with high blend biodiesels. HVO fuel does not contribute to acid rain, negates the health hazards associated with handling diesel fuels and is highly efficient.
The introduction of HVO fuel to the fleet forms an integral part of Bunzl Catering Supplies’ Sustainable Future programme, an industry leading initiative that helps employees, customers and suppliers to understand their environmental impact and aims to contribute to a working and living environment that is safe, supportive and sustainable. As part of the programme the business measures operating improvements in areas such as recycling, reducing fuel usage and sourcing sustainable products.
Justin Turquet, Head of Sustainability at Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division said: “As part of our commitment to building a sustainable future we are constantly looking to provide our customers with sustainable solutions to foodservice delivered through an efficient and environmentally responsible distribution network. Our move to HVO fuel is another important step on this journey.”
James Matthews, Operations Director at Bunzl Catering Supplies said: “We are delighted to switch to HVO fuel to service the catering and hospitality industry in London and feel proud to be one of the first UK distributors within our sector to do so. Our sustainability strategy in operations is to reduce our environmental impact and look for new ways to improve our performance and therefore reduce our carbon footprint. We are committed to switching further vehicles in our national distribution network to HVO fuel in the future.”
