First Sustainable Future report from Bunzl Catering Supplies in 2022 highlights exciting sustainability initiatives under its people, customer and supplier pillars.
This week, Bunzl Catering Supplies launches its Q1 Sustainable Future report (January-March), a key part of its market-leading communication strategy on sustainability. Designed to keep the hospitality industry up to date with best practise and innovation, the 12-page interim report features the most recent, significant sustainability initiatives undertaken by the business under its three pillars: people, customers and suppliers.
Opening the report, Bunzl Catering Supplies features the waste2zero Awards, sponsored by the business in partnership with Footprint News, the annual event showcases the work achieved in the foodservice industry to reduce waste, promote recycling, and encourage environmentally responsible end-of-life. Entries to the awards open in June.
Under its ‘people’ pillar, Bunzl Catering Supplies highlights a new Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) training programme. In January, 12 employees at Bunzl Catering & Hospitality Division completed their MHFA training course, ensuring each divisional site has a trained colleague available to provide early intervention help for someone who may be developing a mental health issue, offering initial support through non-judgemental listening and guidance.
In the ‘Customers’ section of the report, Bunzl Catering Supplies talks about an exciting backhaul recycling trial with restaurant chain Wagamama. From February, local customers will be encouraged to return their used Wagamama takeaway bowls and lids to the Winchester restaurant where they will be collated and segregated on-site and placed into dedicated ‘bowl bank’ bins. These will then be collected by the Bunzl Catering Supplies driver whilst making their usual delivery, utilizing existing space on the vehicle. On return to the Bunzl Catering Supplies Basingstoke branch, the waste bags will be put into a dedicated recycling bin and sent for recycling via its waste management partner.
Justin Turquet, Head of Sustainability at Bunzl Catering Supplies comments: “We are delighted to be partnering with Wagamama to ensure that valuable materials are recaptured and meet the right waste streams for recycling. As we move forward in 2022, we hope to expand this innovative trial across the UK.”
Bunzl Catering Supplies showcases a new product in its exclusive brand Cleanline Eco range in the ‘Suppliers’ section of the report. In February , Bunzl Catering Supplies launched the Cleanline Eco Ultra-One Multi-Purpose Sanitising Wipe. Made from responsibly sourced 100% viscose material, the wipe contains a blend of natural organic ingredients, including peppermint oil and lavender oil. As part of the award-winning Cleanline Eco range of sustainable cleaning products, the Ultra-One Wipe is aligned to the Eco Star standard, with the primary objective to promote responsible consumption and production, aim to protect life on land and water, and be effective for professional use. The Ultra-One Wipe provides a sustainable alternative to traditional wipes, and significantly, the wipe’s reusable tub can be refilled from a refill pouch to reduce plastic packaging waste by up to 85% on each occasion. The refill pouch also reduces storage and transportation impact, taking up 43% less space compared to tub canisters.
Bunzl Catering Supplies is utilising its interim Sustainable Future reports to share and celebrate best practise and innovation in sustainability as it happens in the catering and hospitality industry, recognising specific industry and legislative challenges and highlighting the collaborative endeavour and achievements to overcome them. As a leading supplier of food packaging and hygiene products, Bunzl Catering Supplies is committed to making hospitality happen for a sustainable future.
