From May, as part of the Government’s road map for reopening the economy, hospitality operators have been welcoming their customers back indoors. A significant step towards a new normal, Bunzl Catering Supplies is helping its customers get back to business with a 24-page Spring/Summer 2021 brochure of material and design innovation. Launched under its Innovate brand, the collection hosts new and innovative products that can help hospitality operators reopen and deliver their summer menus with confidence in the wake of the pandemic.

One product that has been designed specifically to increase customer confidence is the wrapped paper straws, found on page 5 of the Innovate brochure. Paper straws are a suitable alternative to plastic straws, which were restricted in 2020 in line with the EU SUP Directive and the UK Government Waste and Resource Strategy. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, wrapping straws in paper prevents hand contamination before use, giving customers increased confidence that the straws are completely clean and safe at point of use.

Recently, environmental legislation and growing public concern over plastic waste has accelerated the requirement for innovation in product design, supply chain management and end-of-life solutions in single-use food packaging. As part of its Sustainable Future programme, Bunzl Catering Supplies is proactively bringing sustainable food packaging options to market.

Cleverly designed cold food packaging made from two separate material types, amiklip™ board bases (with bio-coating) and rPET lids are easily separated at point of disposal for recapture and recycling at a material recycling facility. Featured on page 9 of the Innovate brochure, the board bases are an attractive and leak-resistant solution for a range of on-the-go cold food dishes, whilst the rPET lids provide excellent product visibility for on-shelf appeal.

Another excellent example of material innovation is the Notpla coated kraft food boxes on page 12. These kraft food boxes, made from FSC certified board, are lined with Notpla Coating, a special lining made from seaweed and plants that replaces the usual plastic coating on foodservice products.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, innovation in single-use food packaging has helped operators mobilise delivery and take-out options, whilst robust on-site hygiene programmes continue to be critical for customer confidence. With this in mind, the Innovate brochure includes a clever and unique antimicrobial surface spray that remains active for up to 60 days. Zonitise Protect is a long-lasting antimicrobial surface spray that can be applied to any type of surface to provide continuous protection against many different viruses, bacteria, mould, algae, odours and fungi for up to 60 days. It is the only antimicrobial coating to be verified to achieve a 99.9% kill of Sars Cov2 within 10 minutes, 47 days after being applied to the surface. Zonitise is applied in moments but protects for months and is an intelligent inclusion in any hygiene regime to keep surfaces self-sanitizing between cleaning cycles.
