‘SHINE Games’ – raising money for the charities closest to our hearts.

As we enter a Summer of sporting action, today we commence our inaugural ‘SHINE Games’ to raise much-needed funds for our chosen charities, Nia Children’s Foundation, Mind, and Cancer Research UK. In an intrepid effort to raise our donation target of £12,000, for the next 2 weeks, colleagues at Bunzl Catering Supplies will be taking part in a plethora of sporting activities, including walking challenges, badminton, and basketball, alongside some respite ventures like cake-baking, to restore the calories!

Our chosen charities have been selected because they hold a particular significance to our team members. Andrew Steele, Imports Manager, comments: “In April 2021, I was diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and after a significant number of tests, I was told I’d need 12-hours of surgery followed by a long period of recovery in hospital and at home, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This was an extremely difficult time for myself and my family, and I have been left with life altering side effects, however, I would not be here today without the remarkable research and development that Cancer Research UK undertakes. Events like the ‘SHINE Games’ allow charities like Cancer Research UK to continue their life saving work, I am so pleased that we are supporting them.”

Shaun Watford, Depot Operations Manager, Basingstoke, has also been affected by cancer, he says: “12 years ago, I lost both my parents to cancer 11 months to the day from one another. My Mum’s death was sudden, diagnosed only 8 weeks from her passing. 6 months later, my Dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and he was given just 12 weeks to live. My Brother-In-Law and I provided his palliative care at home, it was longest 3 weeks of my life. The work Cancer Research UK do is amazing, and I believe that if my Mum had been diagnosed today she would have had a far greater chance of survival due to the advancements in treatment supported by this extremely important charity.”

It is because of real-life stories like these that Cancer Research UK is so close to our hearts, and we are reaching out for support because we believe that together we can make a significant difference to all 3 of our nominated charities. Donations can be made via the website or, if you are feeling brave, you can come along and participate in an event, alternatively you can simply share this post to promote our endeavour to others who may wish to donate. However you support us, your contribution will be received with huge appreciation.

Our SHINE values were launched in 2023 to reflect our values and positively influence how we work together. The ‘SHINE Games’ illustrate our determination to engage with our people, customers, and suppliers to support local communities and charitable organisations.
