In-vogue beverages 2018 – The drink that is loved so matcha by many!

Wednesday May 30, 2018

According to the latest Google Beverage trends report, tea lattes are all-set to be the most popular hot (or cold) drink for 2018. Searches on Google for the term ‘tea latte’ have increased by 42 per cent since 2014.

Tea lattes are a style of milk tea and a variation on caffè lattes. Like caffè lattes, they are typically made with steamed milk, however, instead of espresso, they contain tea, usually in the form of a concentrate made from strong-brewed tea. A tea latte can be served hot or cold. For catering and hospitality operators looking to serve this popular drink, all that’s required are two simple ingredients; milk and a favourite tea.

One type of tea latte that has become extremely popular with consumers is the matcha latte. Matcha is a green tea powder that is said to be a rich mix of vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids that can elevate mood and concentration.

A recent Mintel study on consumer trends revealed that 74 per cent of consumers are now looking for health benefits when purchasing a drink. Consumers want drinks, like matcha, that burn calories, detoxify the body and help the immune system.

In the UK customers can try a matcha tea latte at the coffee shop chain Starbucks. Starbucks introduced three tea latte flavours to its menu in January 2018, which are Rooibos, Rooibos red apple and matcha. In March 2018, Starbucks revealed that the matcha latte was so popular with customers that they have added it as a permanent addition to their drinks menu.

The tea category manager at Starbucks, Charlotta Oldham said: “Our new Teavana Tea Lattes are a new way of extracting flavour from tea leaves, where the tea leaves are ground into a very fine powder and then blended with steamed milk – a recipe only possible thanks to the experience and craftsmanship of our baristas.”
