A brief history of toilet paper
Luxury 3-ply toilet paper joins PRISTINE paper hygiene range
Rolled and perforated toilet paper as we’re familiar with today was invented around 1880. Various sources attribute it to the Albany Perforated Wrapping (A.P.W.) Paper Company in 1877 and to the Scott Paper Company in 1879 or 1890.
The Scott Company was too embarrassed to put their name on their product, as the concept of toilet paper was a sensitive subject at the time, so they customized it for their customers.
In 1935, Northern Tissue advertised “splinter-free” toilet paper. Yep, you read that right; early paper production techniques sometimes left splinters embedded in the paper! In 1942, St. Andrew’s Paper Mill in Great Britain introduced the first 2-ply toilet paper.
Back to the present day; Bunzl Catering Supplies has seen an increase in the sales of 3-ply toilet tissue. In the UK we currently use an average of 57 sheets of toilet paper every day and the market for luxury toilet paper is growing. In response to this demand Bunzl Catering Supplies Exclusive Brands has launched a luxury 3-ply ultra-toilet tissue as part of its exclusive brand PRISTINE.
PRISTINE paper hygiene products have been designed to meet the demands of busy catering and hospitality businesses and come with a CHSA endorsement – an accreditation scheme designed to give customers confidence on quality and length.
Available from 6 July 2015, PRISTINE 3-ply ultra-toilet tissue rolls are packed in cases of 40, which is 11 per cent greater than industry standard.
