Reducing our Carbon Footprint
Due to climate change, the severity, rate, and unpredictability of extreme weather events are increasing, posing significant challenges to society and the environment. At Bunzl, we acknowledge our role in this challenge. In October 2021, we joined the United Nations’ Race to Zero initiative, Since November 2022, we have been actively pursuing near and long term carbon reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are committed to achieve net zero emissions, including Scope 3, by 2050 at the latest.
Transport stands as the UK’s leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. At Bunzl Catering Supplies, we directly manage our own transport fleets, pro-actively investing in training and technology that cuts carbon emissions and optimizes routes, such as telematics systems and ORTEC software, ensuring driving standards and routes are fully optimized. In 2021, we switched our London fleet of vehicles to HVO fuel – a second-generation biofuel made from 100% renewable raw materials that offers net greenhouse gas reductions of up to 90% in comparison to fossil diesel fuel.
Our ‘Transport Carbon Calculator’, identifies opportunities for emission reductions by measuring the carbon impact of deliveries at the account and site levels. Moreover, it evaluates the impact of improving average order values and reducing delivery frequency.
Bunzl plc participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project, reporting Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) carbon emissions, waste to landfill, and recycling. We meticulously record, monitor, and report (quarterly) our carbon footprint at an operating company level. This process aligns with our target and reporting procedures, subject to annual audits by external ISO 1400 auditors.
